There’s a particular discomfort that high-performing women don’t always talk about.

It isn’t burnout.
It isn’t failure.
It isn’t a lack of achievement.

It’s the quiet realization that the version of success you’ve been working toward no longer feels satisfying.

And that realization can feel disorienting.

When the metrics still make sense, but you don’t

On paper, everything may still make sense.

The role.
The income.
The credibility.
The momentum.

You know how to operate within this framework. You’ve mastered it.

But something subtle shifts.

The metrics that once motivated you, like titles, promotions, performance, and recognition, no longer spark the same feeling. You can still reach them, but you don’t feel the same drive to pursue them.

And because nothing is technically wrong, it’s easy to question yourself instead of the metric.

The evolution of ambition

Ambition doesn’t disappear as you grow older or more experienced.

It evolves.

Early ambition is often about expanding, proving yourself, building, accumulating, and advancing. It’s something others can see.

Later ambition becomes more refined.

It asks different questions:

• Is this aligned?

• Is this sustainable?

• Is this the direction I actually want, or just the one I know how to pursue?

This isn’t about losing your drive. It’s about changing what matters to you.

But if you keep measuring yourself by old ideas of success, this change can feel like disappointment instead of progress.

The guilt of wanting something different

Many capable women feel guilty admitting that success no longer feels like enough.

After all, they’ve worked hard for it.

They’re grateful.
They’re stable.
They’re respected.

So when you start to wonder, Is this it? it can feel ungrateful or even self-indulgent.

But wanting something different doesn’t invalidate what you’ve built.

It simply means that the version of success that once worked for you may not be the one you want to keep following forever.

Designing a new metric

Planning toward a longer horizon changes how you interpret this moment.

When you start thinking years ahead, you get the chance to reflect without feeling rushed.

Instead of asking how to achieve more, you can ask:
What does “enough” actually look like for me?

Not in comparison.
Not in competition.
Not in reaction.

But in alignment.

This is when success starts to move from collecting achievements to living with purpose.

Success as alignment, not expansion

For many high-achieving women, the next step isn’t about reaching a higher level.

It’s about creating something better.

Better rhythms.
Better boundaries.
Better definitions.

Success begins to mean:

• A life you don’t need to escape from.

• Work that fits your values, not just your capabilities.

• Growth that doesn’t require constant proof.

That change is subtle, but it makes a big difference.

A quieter ambition

When success stops feeling like enough, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed.

It means you’re ready to define it differently.

And that definition won’t come from adding more.

It will come from refining what matters.

Looking ahead to 2031 has taught me that the most powerful changes aren’t big, dramatic exits. They come from steady adjustments over time.

Not abandoning success.

Rewriting it.

A new role.

A new business.

A new chapter entirely.

But often, the real issue isn’t who you are.

It’s how your life is set up.

Reinvention stands out more than restructuring

Reinvention is easy to see. It shows you’re making changes and lets you say, “See? I’m evolving.”

Restructuring is less obvious.

It might mean changing how you spend your time.

Reevaluating commitments.

Letting go of some expectations without rushing to replace them.

Because it’s subtle, restructuring doesn’t get as much attention as reinvention.

But it is often the more powerful move.

When your life still fits, but the pace doesn’t

Many women don’t need to leave what they’ve built.

They need to change how they live within it.

Before I consider changing careers, I look at my schedule.

Before I start something new, I think about my energy.

Before I plan an exit, I focus on how my days are structured.

If your life’s structure isn’t working, reinventing yourself won’t fix it.

You’ll just bring the same unsustainable habits into a new situation.

The discipline of making adjustments

Restructuring takes a different kind of discipline.

It’s not just about pushing through. It’s about learning to adjust.

It means asking yourself:

• What no longer needs to be optimized?

• What can be simplified without consequence?

• What expectations were inherited rather than chosen?

This work isn’t dramatic, and no one cheers you on for it.

But it creates something important: space in your life.

And having that space can change everything.

Looking ahead from 2031 and planning backward

Since I plan to retire in October 2031, I’m not making changes because I’m burned out.

I’m making changes now to create better alignment.

That difference is important.

When you plan with the long term in mind, you don’t wait until you’re exhausted to make changes. You start adjusting early, so the life you want doesn’t mean undoing everything you have now.

Making changes now helps your future feel steady instead of sudden.

Before you try to become someone new

It’s easy, especially for ambitious women, to think that growth always means doing more.

More visibility.

More impact.

More movement.

But sometimes, growth means refining what you already have.

A more intentional rhythm.

Focusing on fewer things.

Taking more time to decide.

If you reinvent without restructuring, you’ll end up overextending yourself again.

Restructuring first helps make any future changes more sustainable.

Building a steadier foundation

If you feel like you need a big change, think about this:

Try restructuring before you reinvent.

Change your pace.

Reconsider your commitments.

Adjust your expectations.

Then see what becomes clear.

Sometimes, you don’t need a new identity to find clarity.

You just need to design your current life better.

We’ve learned how to move forward without it—how to make decisions, meet expectations, and figure things out as we go. Independence becomes a skill, then a reflex.

Which is why it’s easy to miss this:

The permission we need in this season isn’t external.

Why competence can delay clarity

When you’re capable, you can tolerate misalignment for a long time.

You know how to adapt. To optimize. To make things work, even when they no longer fit. That ability serves you well early in a career. It builds momentum.

But later, that same competence can become a quiet obstacle.

Instead of asking whether your current structure is still serving you, you ask how to perform better within it. Instead of questioning the direction, you refine the execution.

Clarity gets postponed, not because you don’t want it or deserve it, but because you’ve learned to function without it. We are used to making it happen and defining everything required because we can.

The permission to pause without feeling like its failure

The most important thing you can do now is give yourself permission to pause without interpreting it as stagnation.

Not a pause from responsibility.

A pause from unnecessary urgency.

Long-range planning, especially when your timeline stretches years into the future, requires space. It requires resisting the impulse have everything figured out and fixed now.

The permission here is simple, but often unfamiliar to high-performing women:

You don’t have to act on everything immediately.

Some realizations are meant to mature before they become decisions and actions.

Releasing unnecessary timelines

Many high-performing women are still measuring progress against timelines that made sense when they were young and just starting out in their careers.

Those timelines were built for accumulation:

• experience

• credentials

• visibility

• promotion

But now, it’s time to be discerning. What’s really needed?

The permission isn’t to slow down just for the sake of it; it’s to choose timing deliberately, rather than defaulting to moving fast because it worked before.

Planning with a longer horizon allows us to see this more clearly. It reveals which expectations are inherited, and which are chosen.

Permission as a planning tool

Permission isn’t passive.

In this season, it functions as a planning tool.

It allows you to:

• gather information without rushing to conclusions

• explore possibilities without committing prematurely

• refine what matters before building around it (so key, because I am known for doing the opposite)

This is how you avoid designing a future that looks impressive but feels misaligned once you arrive. Let’s not set ourselves up to have to rework anything (intentional).

A steadier way to move forward

Permission doesn’t mean opting out of ambition.

It means redirecting it.

Toward a future designed with intention, not reaction. Toward a second life that doesn’t require recovery from the first.

I’m learning that alignment doesn’t announce itself loudly. Sometimes it just feels… settled.

Moving Into the Second Life (Without Rushing It)

The Second Life Series was born out of this exact feeling, the space between who you’ve been and who you’re becoming. Not a reinvention. Not a dramatic pivot. Just a honest recalibration.

In this season, I’m thinking a lot about identity:

• What stays.

• What evolves.

• What no longer fits — even if it once did.

My style has become clearer during this season. The way I get dressed isn’t about trends or accumulation. It’s about support. Ease. Function. Confidence. The clothes have to make sense for the life I’m actually living, and the one I’m intentionally building.

No-Buy January & the Discipline of Discernment

No-Buy January hasn’t felt restrictive, it’s felt clarifying.

By choosing not to shop, I’ve created space to:

• Shop my closet

• Reimagine pieces

• Sit with wanting vs. shopping impulsively

What surprised me most is how unbothered I was with not shopping.

Instead of shopping, I’ve been curating a reward list, items I’ll consider after successfully completing each no-buy month. This small shift has changed everything. It turns spending into a conscious decision, not a reflex. And honestly it feels good and I’m loving the mindset shift.

Here’s what’s currently on my list:

• A structured work bag with carrying versatility

• Tortoise shell glasses (timeless, always chic)

• Pilates sets

• A casual chocolate brown shoe or boot

Every dollar I don’t spend impulsively goes into my Second Life money bucket, a quiet but powerful reminder that my future deserves just as much care as my present.

What’s Actually in Rotation Right Now

Ironically, not shopping has made my wardrobe feel more expansive.

I’m wearing:

• A long wool coat I already owned (not the color I wanted, but after a visit to the cleaners… undefeated)

• Brown suede boots that continue to earn their keep

• Elevated basics pulled straight from my closet

• Signature scents that feel grounding and confident

The lesson? Style isn’t about newness. It’s about intention.

A Note on Rest, Growth, and Taking Your Time

I’m still reading Notes on Being a Man by Scott Galloway — slowly, on purpose. Some ideas need space to land. Some questions lead to deep conversations that need to be had.

January has reminded me that consistency matters more than intensity, and growth doesn’t always look productive on the outside.

Sometimes it looks like restraint.

Sometimes it looks like reflection.

Sometimes it looks like choosing not to act — yet.

What replaces it isn’t chaos.

It’s tension.

A subtle awareness that while things are “fine,” they’re no longer fully aligned. That the next phase requires something different than effort alone.

That tension is where many high-performing women get stuck—not because we don’t know how to work, but because we were never taught how to reimagine without urgency.

When capability becomes a blind spot

Being capable is a strength but it can also become a constraint.

High-performing women are often praised for endurance, adaptability, and resilience. We’re good at making things work, even when they no longer fit.

So when the old structures start to feel insufficient, we don’t immediately question the structure.

We question ourselves.

We assume we need:

• more clarity

• a better plan

• renewed motivation

• another credential or direction

But the issue is rarely a lack of ability.

More often, it’s an outgrown framework—one that was designed for an earlier version of us.

What should I do next?

What kind of life do I actually want to live in my second chapter?

Why this struggle is often misunderstood

This phase is frequently mislabeled as:

• burnout

• lack of gratitude

• midlife crisis

But for many women, it’s none of the above.

It’s a recalibration.

A recognition that the next chapter can’t be built using the same definitions, timelines, or expectations that shaped the last one.

And that realization, while quiet, can feel destabilizing if you don’t have the right words to articulate it.

A steadier way forward

There’s nothing wrong with being in this in-between space.

It doesn’t mean you’re behind.

It doesn’t mean you need to pivot immediately.

And it certainly doesn’t mean you need to abandon what you’ve built.

It means you’re ready to plan differently.

From steadiness.

From alignment.

From a longer view that allows room for identity to evolve before decisions are finalized.

We’re not reacting to discomfort, but designing with intention while time is still on our side.

I didn’t really know what retirement planning was supposed to look like. I’ve never had anyone talk to me about it or share personal experiences, but what I’ve learned is that planning works best when it’s done before pressure arrives. And when the retirement seed was planted, I began putting things in motion in that moment, and we are now five years out from my planned exit date.

Planning from a distance allows for:

• discernment instead of reaction

• alignment instead of acceleration

• choices made calmly, not quickly

I’m not trying to rush my career to the finish line. I’m making sure that when I do arrive, I’m able to settle into the woman I’ve been practicing and proclaiming to be.

What intentional planning looks like right now

In this season, planning doesn’t look dramatic. It looks quiet and with purpose.

It means:

• Thinking about how I want my days to feel, not just how they’ll be funded

• Making money decisions that support future ease, not present excess

• Choosing restraint in some areas so I have flexibility later

• Allowing my identity to expand beyond productivity—slowly

Nothing here is urgent. That’s the point.

Why this matters more than a date on the calendar

Most conversations about retirement focus on the exit. The countdown. The finish line.

Very few talk about the years in between—the ones where you’re still capable, curious, and employed, but no longer willing to build a future that equates to another job.

This long view changes the quality of the planning.

It turns preparation into something grounded. Sustainable. Personal.

A note on tools and structure

As part of this process, I use a simple planning guide to think through my second life over time—not as a checklist, but as a framework. I mentioned it briefly in the video for anyone who prefers structure while reflecting.

There’s no rush with any of this. Thoughtful planning works best when it’s allowed to unfold slowly.

I love to shop, try on different items, and visualize the looks I have in my head. But for some, shopping can feel overwhelming—or expensive, especially if you don't have a strategy. The good news is you don't need a huge budget to build a wardrobe you love; you just need to shop with intention. It took me a long time to get this figured out, and after listening to some of my fashionista favs, I finally got it. I know how to shop like a pro without breaking the bank.

Here are my top tips for shopping with intention:

1. Have a Plan: Before shopping, make a list of what your wardrobe is missing. Is it a pair of white jeans to transition into the new season? A new trench coat or blazer? A new pair of loafers? Knowing what you're looking for keeps impulse buys at bay.

2. Set a Budget: Determine how much you're willing to spend ahead of time; this keeps your spending intentional and guilt-free. I set a maximum budget of $1000 for seasonal hauls as needed. Most of the time, my budget is lower because of the staples I've previously purchased.

3. Mix High and Low: Invest in high-quality staples like blazers or leather boots, but balance your wardrobe with affordable finds from consignment shops and other quality budget-friendly brands. Banana Republic is one of my favorite brands, but I love a good Zara find 😉

4. Know When to Splurge: Certain pieces—like a timeless handbag, a tailored coat, or a great loafer (I'm into them now 🤣)—are worth the investment because they'll last for years.

5. Shop Preloved: Thrifting and consignment shops are treasure troves for unique, budget-friendly finds. Plus, it's a more sustainable way to shop. Rent the Runway was one of my favorite ways to shop preloved before moving to Germany.

6. Take Advantage of Sales: Sign up for your favorite brands' newsletters to stay updated on sales and discounts. Consider a store card to collect points towards purchases and member discounts.

Shopping isn't about buying more; it's about choosing better. Be intentional about what you bring into your wardrobe, and you'll build a collection that reflects your style and values.

One of my favorite style girlies on Instagram, @ohheyykay, says it best, "It's in you, not on you," I love that because the majority of the time, that's the case. Now, SOMETIMES you can wear something that makes a BANG!!

This season marks the perfect time to declutter, shop my closet, shake up my wardrobe, and take some style risks.

This week, I decided to switch things up: breathing new life into a classic denim outfit with unexpected layers and a fresh perspective that left me feeling myself all day, Lol.

Denim has always been a staple in my wardrobe—a go-to for casual days, elevated dinners, and everything in between. But like most of us, I've worn my favorite denim pieces in the same combinations so often that they've started to feel uninspiring. This time, I was determined to see a few of my favs through a different lens, proving that even the most familiar outfits can feel brand new with a bit of creativity.

The Look: A Denim Ensemble Like Never Before

It started with my classic denim shirt and my favorite high-waisted barrell jeans from Banana Republic. Individually, these pieces are wardrobe workhorses—but when styled together in the usual way, they did not give the vibe I wanted to give. So, I decided to layer, layer, and layer some more.

First, I slipped on a lightweight shirt in a neutral shade under the denim shirt. This added texture and gave me a cozy base for the cold winter weather in Germany. On top of the denim shirt, I added a slightly oversized knit vest in a wheat color—a layer that provided warmth while breaking up the all-denim look.

I threw my soft oatmeal-colored trench over my shoulder to bring in some edge, giving the look a polished, street-style finish.

Accessories played a role, too. I carried my brown The Row dupe 😉 and wore my brown leather ankle boots for a chic, classic touch.

Why It Worked

Layering has this magical ability to transform even the simplest pieces into something extraordinary. By mixing textures, playing with proportions, and introducing unexpected elements, I created a look that felt exciting and fresh while staying true to my style.

The denim shirt and jeans served as a strong foundation, allowing the layers to shine without feeling overwhelming. The neutral tones of the vest and coat added dimension without clashing, pulling everything together.

Most importantly, this layered look felt like a bold step slightly outside my comfort zone—proof that style risks can pay off in major ways.

It's about finding new ways to celebrate the pieces you already own and permitting yourself to experiment with your style. When I launched my Substack newsletter, I Thought That Was Cute, it felt like an extension of myself—a place where I could pour my love of style, creativity, and authenticity into a community of like-minded women. But life, as it tends to, had its plans for me. In the past year, I stepped away from writing the newsletter. A lot happened: I launched a new website, found myself in a creative rut I didn't expect, and then moved out of the country. Feeling so disconnected from my creative spark was disheartening for someone who loves inspiring others.

Taking a step back wasn't easy, but it was necessary. Sometimes, the best way to reignite your passion is to let it rest while focusing on other parts of your life. And now, as I walk into 2025, I'm excited to announce that I Thought That Was Cute is back—and it's coming back more substantial, with a clear mission to inspire everyday women to live their best, most stylish lives.

A Creative Reset

The past year gave me space to reflect on what truly matters. Moving out of the country wasn't just a physical relocation but also an emotional and mental shift. I needed to find footing in a new environment, establish routines, and learn to embrace the changes. During that time, I began to notice something: inspiration is everywhere.

I started to feel those creative sparks reigniting. But it wasn't just the external inspiration that shifted my perspective—it was the internal work I was doing. I realized I had been putting too much pressure on myself to be "perfect" and always to create polished and just-right content. In doing so, I'd lost the joy of simply creating. It took my best friend to remind me to use the inspiration around me and, when I'm not feeling it, to share that as well. People relate and want to connect with someone honest and authentic with their creativity.

Now, I'm in a better place—both mentally and creatively. I've rediscovered what drew me to writing and connecting with women in the first place: the belief that style is for everyone and that it's never too late (or too early) to step into your most confident self.

But it's the perfect combination of comfort and style, making it ideal for chill weekend wear. Start with a pair of leggings or joggers to achieve the athleisure look. When creating your style board, be sure to include clothing and accessories that fit within your personal style. This can consist of anything from dresses and skirts to jeans and t-shirts. Look for pieces you can mix and match to create a variety of outfits. You can also include accessories like shoes, bags, and jewelry to complete your looks.

In addition to clothing and accessories, consider adding makeup and hair inspiration to your style board. This can include anything from natural, dewy makeup to bold, colorful looks. I like an effortless natural makeup look since I don’t wear much makeup anyway.

5. Keep it Organized

Keep your style board organized. You can create sections for different categories, such as clothing, accessories, makeup, and hair. You can also use a digital platform like Canva or Pinterest to create a visual board that is easy to organize and update. Canva and Pinterest are my go-to’s, especially since I’m NOT that organized 🤣

Now that we’ve discussed some tips for creating your spring-style board let’s look at my board for inspiration.

My Spring Style Board

My spring-style board is all about bold pops of color and feminine details. I’ve incorporated shades of green, blue, and neutrals like white, beige, and black. My board focuses on clothing inspiration that reflects my personal style and looks that I want to recreate. Not so many accessories since I mostly wear the same everyday jewelry and not so much makeup. I’m a natural-beat kind of gal 😉.

Clothing

I’ve included a mix of blazers, skirts, shorts, and jeans for clothing. I plan to wear plenty of denim as my staple this Spring and Summer, so that’s the basis of most of my outfits. My Spring looks will consist of comfort for starters, a bit of edge, pops of color, oversized blazers, and airy dresses/slip skirts. I think these pieces can be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits.

Accessories

Regarding accessories, I plan to stick with my everyday gold jewelry. I’ll mix some pearl jewelry for a feminine touch now and again. I love the Gucci mules, and green sling-back heels for a pop of color. Since I own all the shoes on my board, no shopping is needed to create my desired looks. That was the goal 😉. As far as handbags go, I’ll figure that out once I style the look, but I have some ideas in mind. I got a couple news bags that I’m excited to throw into the Spring mix.

Makeup

I love the dewy, natural look with a pop of pink or red lips. I’ll add purple and a nude lip to the mix. I may also include an eye shadow, depending on the occasion. I have an ILIA pallete that’s my go-to. The natural makeup look can be adapted to fit any occasion, but it’s all in what you like.

Hair

Finally, for hair, I plan to rock my short pixie for the most part. But when it’s vacation time, I’ll go for the braids for versatility and ease of maintenance. My Spring style board doesn’t focus on hair at all, but it’s easy to imagine the look when I stick to one style.
